Fortunately, Andy and I were able to touch base nearly every morning. I’d call him collect.

For him, it was a way to know I hadn’t been harmed during the night. For me, it was reassurance that my family was still there and Andy was still answering the phone. It was like a breath of fresh air from the outside.

It was my link to a life I missed—and was hoping I would get back to someday. Phone calls and visits weren’t the only way we stayed in touch. There were letters and greeting cards, too.

The Mitchells were keeping the U.S. Postal Service in business. Dozens of cards and letters flew back and forth between my cramped, crowded room and our home address. There were notes from me to Gari, from Gari to me, from me to Ashley and Andy individually and together and vice versa, and from me to the whole family.

Eventually the record holder would be Ashley, who sent me an incredible 100 letters.

As for Andy, his specialty was answering the phone, not writing notes. But he did send a few, once writing:
